This September, P.A.W.S. Hancock is proud to shine the spotlight on Brandon Haines, our Volunteer of the Month! For the past five years, Brandon has been a dedicated and reliable part of our team, giving his time and energy to help animals in need and supporting the volunteers who care for them.
Brandon’s journey into animal rescue began with his wife, who first introduced him to fostering dogs. While fostering was rewarding, they soon realized they wanted to focus their efforts closer to home. That’s when they found P.A.W.S. Hancock. “We weren’t able to continue fostering dogs, so we volunteered at different events through PAWS and cleaned at PetSmart once a week for the PAWS cats there,” Brandon explained. “We both love animals, so it was fun.”
Today, Brandon serves as the volunteer coordinator for the PetSmart cleaning team, making sure the cats are cared for and the space is welcoming for potential adopters. He also helps with other events whenever possible. One of his favorite parts of the job? Getting to know the cats’ unique personalities while training new volunteers. “Every animal has their own personality and quirks, and it is fun to get to know them,” he shared.
Brandon and his wife are animal lovers through and through, sharing their home with two dogs, four cats, and a bearded dragon. His passion for making sure animals find loving homes is what fuels his commitment. “Knowing animals are going to good homes” is what keeps him motivated.
Of course, volunteering isn’t without challenges. Sometimes volunteers can’t make their scheduled shifts at PetSmart, which can create gaps in care. Brandon is grateful for the supportive relationship between P.A.W.S. and the PetSmart employees, who step in when needed. “Their needs are met until another volunteer can get in there,” he said.
When asked how volunteering has impacted his life, Brandon put it simply: “I like knowing I am lending a helping hand to a local agency.” It’s a humble answer that perfectly sums up his giving spirit.
His advice for anyone considering volunteering? “Give it a try, there are many roles available.” He believes organization and passion for animals are two of the most important qualities for rescue work, but emphasizes that there’s a place for everyone who wants to help.
Looking ahead, Brandon hopes to continue volunteering with P.A.W.S. for as long as possible and dreams of one day starting a business with his wife that could further support animal rescue.
We are so grateful for Brandon’s dedication, leadership, and compassion. His work makes a difference every single day, not just for the animals, but also for the volunteers he guides and encourages.
Brandon, thank you for being such an important part of the P.A.W.S. Hancock family!
