June is National Adopt-A-Cat Month, a special time dedicated to helping shelter cats find the loving homes they deserve. Created by American Humane during the busy "kitten season," this month shines a spotlight on the joys of cat adoption—and there has never been a better time to welcome a feline friend into your family!
Bringing home a rescue cat is an exciting moment. You may be imagining purr-filled cuddles, playful zoomies, and a furry companion curled up beside you. While those moments often come, it's important to remember that your new cat is experiencing a huge life change. New home. New people. New smells. New routines. That's a lot for a little cat!
If your new family member seems shy or unsure at first, don't worry. That's where the 3-3-3 Rule can help.
What Is the 3-3-3 Rule?

The 3-3-3 Rule is a simple guideline that helps adopters understand how many rescue cats adjust to their new homes:
3 Days to decompress
3 Weeks to learn the routine
3 Months to truly feel at home
Every cat is unique, so some may move faster or slower through these stages. The important thing is to let your cat adjust at their own pace.
The First 3 Days: "Where Am I?"
Imagine being dropped into a completely unfamiliar place without understanding what's happening. That's how your new cat may feel during the first few days.
Don't be surprised if your cat:

Hides under a bed or behind furniture
Eats very little
Avoids interaction
Seems nervous or cautious
This doesn't mean they don't like you—it simply means they're taking everything in. Give them a quiet, safe space and allow them to come to you when they're ready.
The First 3 Weeks: "Okay, Maybe This Place Is Pretty Nice!"
As your cat begins to settle in, you'll likely see their confidence grow.
This is when many cats start:

Exploring more of the house
Following family members around
Playing with toys
Showing affection and curiosity
You may even start to see some silly quirks and personality traits emerge. The shy cat hiding under the couch could turn out to be a playful comedian!
The First 3 Months: "I'm Home!"
By the three-month mark, many rescue cats have fully settled into their new lives.
This is often when they:

Form strong bonds with their family
Feel comfortable throughout the home
Show their true personalities
Seek out affection and companionship
The cat who once hid from everyone may now greet you at the door, nap beside you on the couch, or demand breakfast five minutes early every morning.
Patience Creates Trust

One of the greatest gifts you can give a rescue cat is patience. Some cats adjust quickly,
while others need extra time to feel safe. The 3-3-3 Rule reminds us that trust isn't built overnight—but when it happens, the bond is incredibly rewarding.
This National Adopt-A-Cat Month, consider opening your heart and home to a shelter cat. The first few days may require patience, but the years of love, companionship, and laughter that follow are well worth the wait.
At P.A.W.S., we're proud to help cats find the families they've been waiting for. Could your perfect feline friend be waiting for you right now?
