Eight Years Waiting for Kindness

Kyra is an 8-year-old Great Pyrenees who spent her entire life living in a kennel on an Amish property. She didn’t know soft beds, walks, toys, or what it felt like to be part of a family. Most of her life was spent watching the world from behind a fence.

At some point, she was given away in a store parking lot to a woman who had a large number of animals. It may have seemed like a fresh start, but only a week later, the woman went through a divorce and left the home — and all of the animals — behind with her ex-husband, who had no idea how to care for them.
As the situation became more unstable, it became clear that Kyra urgently needed to be removed for her safety. A rescue in Michigan stepped in and began searching for somewhere safe for her to go before her situation became even more dangerous. That’s when they reached out to P.A.W.S. Hancock for help.

When Kyra arrived at P.A.W.S., she was filthy, matted, and badly needed care. But even after years of neglect and constant change, she was gentle from the very beginning. She allowed staff and volunteers to bathe her, clean her up, and give her the attention she had likely never experienced before. You could tell she wanted to trust people — she just didn’t quite know how yet.
What surprised everyone most was how incredibly sweet she is.
After everything she’s been through, Kyra still loves people. She leans in for pets, follows volunteers around, and looks at people with the softest eyes. She has the laid-back personality Great Pyrenees are known for and seems happiest just being near someone who cares about her. She’s calm, quiet, and easygoing — the kind of dog that immediately makes you fall in love with her.

It’s heartbreaking to think about how much of her life was spent alone in a kennel. Eight years is a long time to go without comfort, stability, and love. But dogs like Kyra have an amazing ability to forgive and move forward. Instead of fear or anger, she has shown nothing but kindness.
Now, for the first time in her life, Kyra is getting to experience the things every dog deserves: a warm place to sleep, gentle hands, full meals, fresh air, and people who see her as more than just a dog in a cage.
Her story is a sad one, but it’s also a reminder of why rescue matters. Sometimes all it takes is one phone call, one rescue willing to say yes, and a few people willing to care.
Kyra’s new chapter is finally beginning, and we can’t wait to see her enjoy the life she should have had all along.
Kyra will be available for adoption very soon, so keep an eye on the adoption page here for updates on her and the many other adoptable animals still waiting for loving homes.
