Hancock County just took a major leap forward in protecting pets and supporting pet owners. P.A.W.S. (Partners for Animal Welfare Society) has opened the county’s first-ever 24-hour microchip scanning station, designed to reunite lost pets with their families — anytime, day or night.

This new station, located at 1224 W. Main Street in Greenfield, Indiana, gives the public a fast, easy way to check whether a lost pet has a microchip, which can often lead directly to the owner.

How It Works

Using the 24-hour microchip station is simple:

  1. Bring the found pet to the P.A.W.S. center at 1224 W. Main Street, Greenfield, IN, and power on the scanner.

  2. Use the scanner wand to gently scan the pet from head to tail.

    • If the scanner beeps and displays numbers, the pet has a microchip.

    • If “No ID Found” appears, the pet does not have a detectable chip.

  3. If a microchip is found, go to www.petmicrochiplookup.com or scan the QR code located near the scanner. Enter the microchip number into the site.

  4. Call the number provided by the website, and they’ll help connect you with the pet’s owner.

  5. If no microchip is detected or you are unable to connect with the family, call Greenfield-Hancock Animal Management at 317-477-4367, or the Greenfield Police Department (317-477-4410) after hours.

This tool gives good Samaritans a way to act immediately, without having to wait for shelter hours or animal control — a huge win for scared, lost pets and their anxious families.

A Vision for More

P.A.W.S. hopes to expand this project across Hancock County and into surrounding counties, creating a network of microchip stations that can operate around the clock. But to make that vision possible, community support is essential.
