Volunteer Spotlight: Heather Laudeman

ree

This month, we’re excited to spotlight one of our dedicated cat fosters, Heather Laudeman, who joined P.A.W.S. Hancock in January 2024. Heather first connected with the rescue through her former neighbor, Meg McPherson-Kraemer, whose Facebook posts about P.A.W.S. caught her attention. At the time, Heather was fostering with another organization that had become increasingly chaotic, so she made the switch—and we’re so grateful she did.

Animals have been part of Heather’s life from the very beginning. Growing up with both dogs and cats, she always knew she’d continue that tradition into adulthood. Today, she shares her home with three cats—Oliver, Melody, and Pebbles—as well as Bailey, her German Shepherd/Golden Retriever mix who gets genuinely excited every time new foster kittens arrive.

As a foster, Heather’s days vary depending on the needs of the cats in her care. Some kittens need extra socialization, some require close attention when they’re sick, and some are so adorable and outgoing that they find homes before she’s emotionally ready to part with them. No matter the circumstances, Heather pours love and patience into each little life.

Among her most memorable fosters were Prince and Romeo, two very large but very timid brothers. Prince had a talent for disappearing into the basement ceiling or behind unfinished walls, always emerging eventually, while Romeo once hid under the standing freezer. It took time and commitment to build their confidence, but they finally found the perfect forever home. Heather also adores her most recent group—the “cocktail kitties.” Still at the Cattery, they hold such a special place in her heart that she’d gladly welcome all five back into her home.

Fostering isn’t without challenges, and Heather says the emotional toll is the hardest part—especially when a kitten doesn’t make it. Even on those difficult days, she reminds herself that every animal in her care has known love and comfort. That thought keeps her going. Volunteering has also opened her eyes to the overwhelming number of animals needing help and how vital fosters are in bridging that gap. She believes deeply in the “it takes a village” philosophy and emphasizes that every role in rescue matters.

Heather encourages anyone interested in helping animals to give volunteering a try. Whether it’s fostering, cleaning cages, assisting with medical tasks, or working adoption events, she believes there’s a place for everyone at P.A.W.S.—and that the rescue truly needs caring people. She says the most important qualities for this work are a big heart, a gentle touch, and plenty of patience.

To Heather, P.A.W.S. is more than an organization—it’s a community of wonderful volunteers working together for animals who need them. And we’re proud to have her as part of that village.

Thank you, Heather, for bringing comfort, care, and second chances to so many cats and kittens at P.A.W.S.
