'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house,
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The dog beds were placed by the hearth with great care,
In hopes that St. Paws soon would be there;
The pups were all nestled, cozy in beds,
With visions of treats dancing in their heads.
While the cats in their baskets and bunnies in their nests
Dreamt of catnip and scratches all over their chests.
Out in the yard, there arose such a clatter,
I peeked out the window to see what was the matter.
The pets at my side, all lively and quick,
They leaped and they wagged their tails with a flick.
The moon shone down on the lawn’s fresh snow,
Glistening like diamonds with a radiant glow.
And what did appear to our curious eyes?
But a sleigh full of treats and toys, a pet paradise!
Led by a furry figure, lively and brisk,
I instantly knew it was St. Paws, the pet-loving whisk.
With a team of pet pups and cats in their stride,
He whistled and called them, joyfully, with pride.
"Now, Fido! now, Whiskers! now, Fluffy and Mittens!
On, Max! on, Bella! on, Rover and Kitten!
To the top of the fence! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"
With tails wagging madly, they took to the sky,
Their paws making tracks as they flew so high.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof,
The tapping and scratching of each little hoof.
Down the chimney, St. Paws came with a bound,
With a sack full of toys, and treats all around.
He was dressed in fur, from his head to his feet,
A jolly old soul with toys that were sweet.
His eyes, how they twinkled! His laugh, how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
He dispensed the delights with such radiant glee,
Prompting pets to frolic, their spirits carefree.
He patted each pet with a gentle caress,
Then sprang to his sleigh with such finesse.
He whistled to his team, and away they all flew,
Wishing a Merry Christmas to all pets and to you!
And I heard him exclaim as they soared out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!"
