For the past seven months, Diana Redman has been a devoted part of the P.A.W.S. Hancock family, bringing not only her passion for animals but also her years of experience and a heart that beats for rescue work. Diana was inspired to volunteer after fostering kittens on her own for years without support, and she immediately felt at home with PAWS’ mission—especially its commitment to spaying and neutering before adoption. As the cattery manager, Diana handles everything from her regular cleaning days and daily cat care to helping with vaccines and intakes. A typical shift for her includes feeding the cats, scooping litterboxes, and—her favorite part—spending time playing with the kitties.

Animals have always been a constant in Diana’s life. She currently shares her home with dogs, cats, and even chickens, but her love for animals goes all the way back to childhood. Though she grew up with dogs and a rabbit, she says she wasn’t truly happy until she got her very first kitten in kindergarten—a companion she kept until graduating college. Today, her passion for cats is stronger than ever. She loves how even on her hardest days, a few minutes in the cattery can turn everything around. “They’re silly, entertaining, lovable, and adorable. They make my heart happy,” she says.
Of course, rescue work comes with challenges—particularly getting everyone aligned on best practices, especially when it comes to preventing overfeeding and feline obesity. Diana has also learned firsthand the importance of cleanliness and preventing cross-contamination after the heartbreaking loss of a couple of kittens early on. But she remains deeply committed to providing the best care possible and always being willing to learn something new. One of her most touching memories comes from watching a friend adopt two kittens at an event—the friend was brought to tears telling her family how happy they made her, a moment that reaffirmed Diana’s belief in the impact of rescue work.
Volunteering with P.A.W.S. Hancock has been transformative for Diana. She describes it as

“food for my soul” and says it gives her purpose—remarkable words coming from someone who is a registered veterinary technician with experience in general practice, specialty practice, shelter medicine, and teaching. Still, she says her volunteer role is her favorite of all. Her advice to anyone interested in joining the rescue world is simple: ask questions, take time to learn about the organization, and remember that there are roles for everyone—even those who prefer not to get dirty. And when tough days come? Just hold a cat; according to Diana, it cures just about everything.
Looking to the future, Diana hopes to continue growing with the rescue, including possibly applying to serve as a board member. She’d also love to see the organization expand its spay/neuter days, which she believes make a tremendous impact on the community. Above all, Diana’s goal is to help PAWS continue saving lives, educating the public, and giving cats the second chances they deserve.
Thank you, Diana, for managing the P.A.W.S. Cattery with such dedication, compassion, and steady care. Your commitment to the cats that come through our doors makes an incredible difference, and we appreciate you more than you know.
